When this 33-year-old woman was pregnant with her sixth child, her doctor discovered her uterus wall had weakened due to five her previous C-sections. When she went to her 22-week ultrasound appointment, her doctor was stunned when he saw unborn baby’s feet popping right through the amniotic sac.
There are only 26 cases ever reported and it is called a “rupture pregnancy.”
When this young couple from France recently learned they were expecting a son, the 33-year-old mother had no idea she’d developed a tear in her uterus.
Doctors expected to see a normal ultrasound. Instead, an MRI revealed a rare medical phenomenon at 22 weeks.
The mother’s uterine wall had a one-inch rupture. The baby’s foot had penetrated the amniotic sac! The amazing image quickly went viral.
Dr. Pierre-Emmanuel Bouet, lead author of the report, said there are only 26 recorded cases of “rupture pregnancy.”
Dr. Bouet said the woman’s herniated sac was as a result five prior cesarean sections that weakened the uterus wall. Doctors explained the potential risks of the herniated sac, like placenta accreta, hysterectomy and preterm birth. Despite the risks, they decided to move forward with the pregnancy.
A healthy baby boy was born via C-section at 30 weeks. Once delivered, the doctors repaired her uterine rupture.
