Mae Whitman, an actress who has been in the public eye for years, has announced that she’s pansexual on social media.
She first praised through a series of messages posted on Twitter the animated Disney Channel series The Owl House which features the first bisexual lead character of the network. In Whitman’s tweet, she said, “Just taking a moment to say I am so proud to be even a small part of a show like The Owl House. Being pansexual myself, I wish I had such incredible characters like Amity in my life when I was growing up. Queer representation important:,) keep it up world! #TOH.” Mae Whitman is the voice behind the character of Amity.
Whitman also tweeted a link from GLAAD or Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation website to help spread additional awareness and resources about Bi+ acceptance. “I know people might be unfamiliar with what pansexual means; for me, it means I know I can fall in love with people of all genders,” Mae Whitman wrote. “This is the word that fits me best and I’m proud+happy to be part of the Bi+ community.”
Shortly after Whitman’s tweets, she was showered with love from her Twitter followers. One fan commented, “Really happy that you are able to live the way you want and love the way you want.” And support was shown from another fan: “I love you so much!! Sending you all my love and support!!!”
Tess Holliday, Bella Thorne, and Miley Cyrus, in addition to Mae Whitman, also identify themselves as pansexuals. People who identify as pansexual can be defined in a number of ways, but generally, they are attracted to someone regardless of their gender identity and/or sex.
Even though it’s her story to tell, Whitman’s words are a powerful reminder that we all have the ability within us to overcome any obstacles in life.
